Remote Control Airplane With Live Feed Camera

3D Insider is ad supported and earns money from clicks, commissions from sales, and other ways.

Camera drones are everywhere now, but it's not so easy to find an RC plane with camera mounted. And planes that do have cameras are not in the same league as quality camera quadcopters. But then, quadcopter pilots are more interested in aerial photography and video than flying. For RC plane fans, though, it's flying first, and the cameras are there for an added layer of fun.

There are three ways to enjoy first person view (FPV) with an RC airplane:

  1. Buy a plane already equipped with a camera
  2. Buy a plane that is camera-ready (cameras not included)
  3. Attach a camera to a plane that's not camera ready

The last option needs a little creative thinking. Consider the camera's size, shape, weight, and how to mount it. Makers of FPV cameras often promote them for drone kits, especially racing quads. That doesn't mean you can't add them to an RC plane, because you can.

About my 'RC Plane with Camera' Guide

This guide is in two parts. The first section reviews 6 R/C airplanes that have cameras or are camera ready. The second section has short reviews for 5 FPV cameras. I have included a 'what to consider' section before the camera reviews. All products on this page are the result of careful research. I also considered the opinions of industry experts and user reviews during the selection.

Both the RC plane and FPV camera reviews follow the same format. The first three products for each section are for Best Budget, Best Value, and the Top Pick. There's a product's table at the top of each section. Use the tables to navigate to the reviews that interest you most.

RC Planes with Camera Comparison Table

Most of the RC planes here are camera-ready. That means they have mounts or storage compartments to accommodate an aerial FPV setup. You don't have to use the dedicated spaces if you opt for ultra-lightweight micro-sized cameras, though (see camera reviews below).

F959 SKY-King RC Plane Highlights

The F959 by WLtoys arrives with everything you need to fly in the box. It doesn't have a camera, but it does have a mount, so it's "camera ready." Consider WLtoys V959, V222, V262, V333, V323, and V912, among other compatible cameras. This is a small RC plane that makes an excellent trainer.

Flight Characteristics

Wltoys F959 SKY-King moves up/down/forward, turns left/right, and performs 360° turns. It has a 29.5" (750mm) wingspan, a 22.24" (565mm) body, and a 3.5oz (100g) flying weight. The flight time averages 15 minutes on a single charge. Recharging is fast at only 30+ minutes, so you're never grounded for long. Flight performance is steady in low wind situations at anything under full throttle.

The folding prop is a neat idea as there's less resistance when gliding. And the strong, impact resistant EPO material helps to protect this little bird from damage if you do crash.

The Not So Good

This is a 3 channel (CH) version, so it's not as maneuverable as a 4CH craft. That's a good thing if you're a novice, but it can get monotonous if you're not. Also, the lightweight design makes it hard to control if there's too much wind. It's a problem shared by all RC planes in this category.

6 of the Best First Person View FPV cameras

This section reviews 6 cameras that you can fix to most types of aircraft with a little imagination. These are popular FPV cameras among novice and experienced fans of first person view. There are four buying considerations for these products, namely:

  1. Size & weight
  2. Field of view (FOV)
  3. Camera resolution
  4. How to attach it to your aircraft

OK, let's look at each of these points and the reasons they're so significant.

#1 Weight and Size

FPV cameras have come a long way since the heavier, unprotected board products of yesteryear. The optics, electronics, and protection are a lot better than they used to be. They're tiny and lightweight too, weighing between 4–20g. The size and shapes vary between models as well. Makers determine the size of an FPV camera by the distance—in millimeters—between its two mounting holes.

Consider the shape, dimensions, and weight, and where you plan to mount the camera.

There are three standardized sizes available:

  1. Standard: 28mm
  2. Mini: 21mm
  3. Micro: 19mm
  • Nano: not standardized and smaller than micro

#2 Field of View (FOV)

You need to know a camera's field of view (FOV) before you buy it. The focal length of the lens and sensor size determine its FOV. A wider FOV captures more of the environment. That's especially useful for FPV racing and filming proximity. An ultra-wide FOV distorts the image as is the extreme case with fisheye lenses. Make sure you match the FOV with your FPV requirements.

Here are some of the typical FOV options in FPV lenses:

  • 1.2mm lens approx. 185° FOV
  • 1.7mm lens approx. 170° FOV
  • 2.1mm lens approx. 158° FOV
  • 2.5mm lens approx. 147° FOV
  • 2.8mm lens approx. 130° FOV

#3 Camera Resolution

Many of the small FPV cameras operate the analog video. That means resolution measurements are in TV lines (TVL) rather than pixels. A camera with a higher TVL generally produces better results though it's not the only factor. Typical TVL resolutions for FPV cameras are 420/480/600/800/1000/1200. The best way to check a camera's footage is to read user reviews or watch videos for the product.

#4 How to Attach the FPV Camera

There are many ways to attach a small FPV camera to an RC plane. Just make sure you don't buy something too big or heavy for a micro-sized aircraft. You might have to be creative with some models, but where there's a will, there's usually a way. The three options are:

  1. Fixed, pointing in a set direction
  2. Attached to an independent camera mount
  3. Attached to a pan & tilt (P&T) gimbal

The 5 FPV camera options below are all popular choices with FPV pilots. There are many others, but the examples here will give you a good idea of what kind of things to look out for.

The cameras below are all small or microdevices. You may want to consider high-resolution action cameras for larger planes that can carry a higher payload.
